It’s Sweet Valley High if the twins were working-class high school dropouts who joined an army of punk rock sex workers, drag queens and underage alcoholics. “ Mosh Pit is a delightful slap in the face of your grade 11 reading list. It’s a dark world where Simone gradually gains a sense of who she is and, more importantly, who she can be. This edgy young adult novel takes Simone through the modern equivalent of Hades-where drugs, drink and sexual ambiguity make for uncertain footing, physically, morally and emotionally. Mosh Pit, a compelling story of rebel girls in the modern city, stars Simone-torn between her loyalty to her rebellious heart-throb Cherry and her feelings for Carol, streetwise and distant enough to be alluring. Canadian Children’s Book Centre Our Choice Selection, 2005Ī raw look at punk, young love and the sometimes cloudy road to adulthood. environment debate in a simple and fascinating way. This is how I found another book by Ridley, Nature via Nurture, which I would also recommend, since it is a very similar book discussing the genes vs. Each chapter gives such an amazing introduction to each topic that every time I read a chapter I wanted to find out more about it before continuing. Ridley discusses the arguments in such an interesting way that I couldn’t help but read more about it. I had thought of DNA as making proteins for cells, but I had never thought that it would be possible for our decisions to be determined by the genetic code that we are born with. I found the chapter on free will particularly interesting. One of my favourite things about the book is that it is packed with fun facts that I can still remember now, which in turn made me even more interested in the subject. Each chapter discusses a topic in an entertaining way and somehow makes some of the hardest subjects seem simple. The book covers everything on genetics from their history to determination of sexuality, giving a summary of the huge subject of genetics. But I didn’t realise quite how complex DNA is until I read Genome by Matt Ridley. I had always found genetics interesting at school I thought it was amazing how genes could act as the instructions for life. And opening the box summoned them … and they would then take their victim with them when they returned. They were masochists and sadists who offered the ultimate in pleasure, but at a cost. However, in truth, the boxes summoned demons from Hell, travellers in the paths of ecstasy and torment called Cenobites, who had used and scarified their own bodies in pursuit of the ultimate in sensation. That there were mysterious puzzle boxes scattered over the Earth, which could be obtained for a price … Those who sought them were looking for the ultimate pleasure, the borderline between pleasure and pain, and the boxes promised this. That original story laid the background and the groundwork for the Hellraiser mythos. One of his first novellas was called ‘The Hellbound Heart’, and Clive adapted it himself into the screenplay for his debut directorial feature, a little horror film called Hellraiser way back in 1987 … and the rest is history. I’m a massive fan of Clive Barker and his work … from the moment those first Books of Blood were published I was hooked on his imagery and sheer imaginative skill in spinning tales. The sweet pair of the Phantom and Misty is presented on the original Misty and Stormy sculptures created by artist Chris Hess in the 1970s. It tells the story of two young siblings from Chincoteague and their love for a wild pony named the Phantom, whose legacy – in the form of a foal named Misty – would change their lives forever. She was born in captivity at the Beebe ranch to two horses that also lived in captivity. First published in 1947, it’s been in print ever since, and quickly became a classic tale that inspired generations of horse lovers and prompted many visits to the beautiful island of Chincoteague, Virginia. Misty of Chincoteague was never part of the wild herd of Chincoteague Ponies. In 2022, the iconic book Misty of Chincoteague celebrates its 75th anniversary! The first in a long series of Chincoteague pony-inspired stories penned by award-winning author Marguerite Henry, “Misty of Chincoteague” featured illustrations by Wesley Dennis. Here is the original first paragraph of Sense and Sensibility: "The family of Dashwood had long been settled in Sussex. The characters' lives were changed by the appearance of zombies, but the undead were so deeply woven into the story - and Winter's Austen characters were so hilariously dead-on in the midst of the terror - that after awhile you forgot how utterly goofy the book was. Mixing two totally different fiction "industries" - Jane Austen (or Jane Austen fan fiction) and zombies - seemed a breeze for Winters. Winters, pulled off the whole literary mash-up spoof thing. The biggest surprise, however, might have been how well Austen's "co-author," Ben H. PPZ, with its rotting Austen-ish woman on the cover and, um, striking title, took a lot of readers by surprise. If you thought Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was a ridiculous idea, then go ahead and skip to the next review and while you're at it, loosen up your sphincter a little.
